Background
Formed in 1997, Ethnic Health Institute is a community service of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. Its mission is to promote the well-being of minority and underserved populations who suffer disproportionately from a number of health problems that can be prevented or treated. For example, African American, Asian, and Latino populations have a higher incidence of high blood pressure than other ethnic groups. As its first initiative, these ethnic groups were targeted for a series of high blood pressure screening and educational outreaches. |

In partnership with public and private health care institutions, academic health program, health insurers and practitioners, community based organizations and leaders, Ethnic Health Institute serves the community via a four pronged approach: community outreach, health provider education, community health education and research.
Ethnic Health Institute operates under the direction of a voluntary 25 member, ethnically diverse, local advisory board. The board's charge is to support Ethnic Health Institute by helping to develop, organize and evaluate its services and projects.

The Challenge:
Since many of the services offered by the Ethnic Health Institute are low-cost or free, funding from the community is needed to cover operating costs. The Medical Center subsizes the salary of a full-time Ethnic Health Institute Coordinator, but all the funding for health initiatives must be raised through community sources. |
