Background
Alta Bates Summit Medical Center offers comprehensive services designed to meet the needs of diverse communities. Services include 24-hour emergency care, surgery, high-risk obstetrics, Level III Newborn Intensive Care Nursery, acute rehabilitation, diagnostic imaging, occupational health, behavioral health, physical therapy, intensive care and laboratory services.
The Medical Center has distinguished itself particularly in the areas of women and infant services, cardiovascular services, orthopedics, burn treatment, cancer care, bone marrow transplantation, rehabilitation services, and behavioral health.
Despite its size and diversity, however, Alta Bates Summit has never forgotten to fan the flame of compassion lit by its founders in the early 1900's.
Such compassion does not come free. Maintaining up-to-date equipment and offering the latest in cutting edge technology is important in serving the community. Yet the dollars for buying expensive medical machines is not available through the Medical Center's budget. Last year, more than $50 million of requests were made for new medical equipment, yet there was only $7 million available in the budget. Philanthropy is needed to make up the difference.
And as the years have gone by, people have supported Alta Bates Summit through philanthropy, giving according to their ability.
It was as if the future was attached to a great rope, and pulling up the rope successfully required many hands of a great,
growing community working together. Alta Bates Summit Medical Center has been built with one hand helping the other. And with one hand helping another, it will continue to grow and serve all who need care.
Alta Bates Summit-the modern medical center-is dedicated to the same principles as those cherished by the group of founders who started this great institution. It is about human caring, about providing service, and about meeting community needs. It's about individual responses to community needs, each of us contributing special gifts. If there has been growth, it has been to better serve the community. To continue meeting those demands, many hands are needed.
