CRITICAL NEEDS
- Carol Ann Read Breast Health Center Build Out
- Advanced Digital Mammography Machines
Carol Ann Read Breast Health Center Build Out – Breast cancer continues to be the second leading cause of cancer deaths among women. There is an increased risk for breast cancer among East Bay women age 40 and over and an escalating demand for breast health services.
To be located at Providence Pavilion on our Summit Campus, the Carol Ann Read Breast Health Center will deliver combined expert medical care, comprehensive services, cutting edge technology, easy access and an expedited diagnosis program for any woman with an abnormal finding.

The imaging program will feature expert mammography interpretation and will offer a full array of services including:
- Digital Mammography – Computer-aided detection improves the ability to diagnose cancer.
- Ultrasound – These images help to differentiate cancer from other breast abnormalities.
- Stereotactic Core Biopsy - Takes less than a third of the time of traditional surgical biopsy and eliminates the need for general anesthesia.
- Bone Densitometry – Located at the Breast Health Center makes this service convenient and routine for women.
- MRI – Another way to help detect cancer at its earliest stage.
To complete funding for the Breast Health Center’s build out and equipment purchase, the Oncology COE needs $3 million in philanthropic support to close the gap between the $9.5 million already committed and the $12.5 million project need.
Your support will help fund the Carol Ann Read Breast Health Center’s construction and renovation and the purchase of additional equipment .
Advanced Digital Mammography Machines – Up to nine new digital

mammography machines are needed now and in the next three years at both the Peralta Pavilion and the Alta Bates Imaging Facility to substantially increase the capacity for early detection and diagnosis while significantly decreasing the time to do so. Digital mammography’s “filmless” technology includes computer-aided detection, eliminates the use of chemicals to develop films, and enables storage and sharing of digital images. These life-saving capacities will make a tremendous difference in the lives of thousands of East Bay women every year
