Campaign Donations Are Already at Work

Even before the Centennial Campaign for Excellence officially ends, campaign contributions are enhancing Alta Bates Summit Medical Center’s quality care, according to Linda G. Peltz, Alta Bates Summit Foundation Board Chair. A few examples:

> Cardiology “One of the first things we did was to add a special procedures laboratory and advanced patient monitoring,” says Peltz. “Recently, we’ve added another cardiac catheterization lab as part of a $5 million overhaul of the Summit Campus third-floor cardiac care center. We spent more than $3 million for equipment alone, including $700,000 for units to monitor heart function during procedures and $480,000 for a hemodynamic monitoring system.”

> Oncology “Digital mammography machines are the latest, greatest way to screen for breast cancer, and only 15 percent of mammography facilities in the United States have them,” says Peltz. “One machine costs $500,000, and thanks to the campaign, Alta Bates Summit now has eight.” Groundbreaking for the Carol Ann Read Breast Health Center, the East Bay’s first comprehensive breast health facility and a campaign beneficiary, is scheduled to begin next year.

> Women & Infants “We are about to order more than $1.5 million in equipment for this program, and all of this came from the campaign,” says Peltz. “Things like neonatal monitors, scales, bassinets, and high-tech ventilators for premature infants — all of which are very expensive.”

> Family Resource Centers Three information clearinghouses, complete with computers and serving the entire community, will be available at various Medical Center locations (the first at the Summit Campus opens this month).
