Delicious Devotion

It’s been said that cancer is a life-altering experience, one that can inspire patients and their families to reconsider priorities, renew commitments, and be of service. Such is the case for breast cancer survivor Janine Stagg and her husband, Michael, managing partner of the popular Scott’s Restaurants in Oakland and Walnut Creek.

The two are generous contributors to Leap of Faith—the annual benefit for the Carol Ann Read Breast Health Center—which Scott’s hosts and the Foundation co-sponsors. (See “Giant Steps for Leap of Faith,” page 6.) Michael was the catalyst for the event, along with Lisa Bailey, M.D., Janine’s physician at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. Janine served as the event’s first co-chair, and is this year’s sponsorship chair. Scott’s underwrites food and beverage costs.

“The breast center is going to be a one-of-a-kind facility in the East Bay,” says Janine, who adds that thanks to Leap of Faith, she’s a reformed “behind-the-scenes” person and now figures out ways to aggressively recruit new corporate sponsors. “There’s no easier way to come out of your ‘box’ than for something like this. We saw the need for this center in our community. It will change so many people’s lives. The level of care will be incredible.”

Michael readily admits that his family’s cancer travail caused him to reexamine his 12-hour workdays and six-day workweeks. “The time we spend together is much more special,” he says. Giving back to the community allows one’s “efforts to become much bigger than your business,” he adds. “You’re part of a much bigger goal than making a profit. It’s like being part of someone’s life, and that’s what’s most important.”
