Tennis sensation Monica Seles, winner of 53 career WTA singles titles — including nine Grand Slam titles — joins doubles phenom Corina Morariu and a bevy of tennis standouts and celebrities at the 16th annual Alta Bates Summit Celebrity Classic.
The September 29 tennis event, and its companion September 10 golf tourney (a perennial sellout), benefit programs for at-risk youth — including Thunder Road, a substance abuse recovery program for teens and their families, and Youth Bridge mentoring programs.
Seles, the youngest-ever winner of the French Open (at age 16), and Morariu will play exhibition matches of celebrity doubles and mixed doubles, as will well-known celebrities (from television’s Judge Joseph Wapner to KGO radio’s Rich Walcoff), top collegiate players, local teaching pros, and more. “There’s no better place to watch a match than at the Berkeley Tennis Club,” says Margo Garner, Celebrity Classic chair, pointing out that tickets are still available to view the tennis matches. The $25 price includes lunch and a beverage. Additionally, there is a black tie–preferred gala that evening. “It’s great tennis, great ambience — and all for a great cause,” adds Garner. “Don’t miss it!”
