2003 Celebrity Golf and Tennis Classic a Huge Success!

The 2003 Celebrity Golf and Tennis Classic met and exceeded all expectations, surpassing last year's record of raising over $230,000 for breast cancer and other programs and services at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center. Over 1,200 participants and spectators attended the two events.

Golfers enjoyed perfect weather at the Diablo Country Club on September 8th. Celebrity golfers from the sports world on hand were Jim Barnett, Vida Blue, Jimmy Johnson and Jim Davenport. The tournament was capped off with a dinner and awards ceremony hosted by nationally known comedian Bob Sarlatte. The event's big winners were the foursome of Norm Alberts, Bud Sylvia, Ken Lloyd and Mike Mikulich. Bob Caya won the Closest to the Hole Contest, and Jim Barnett was the winner in the Putting Contest.

An equally lovely day was served up for the tennis tournament. A record number of community members turned out on September 20th to the Berkeley Tennis Club to watch sports, media and entertainment celebrities battle on the courts. The event highlight was an exhibition match featuring tennis legends Tracy Austin and Virginia Wade, with commentary by tennis guru Vic Braden.

Other celebrity players included Donal Logue, of the WB sitcom "Grounded for Life"; Academy Award-winning actor Cliff Robertson; game show host extraordinaire Wink Martindale; former "People's Court" star Judge Joseph Wapner; and reality stars Tina Wesson from "Survivor 2: The Australian Outback," and Alex Michel from "The Bachelor." Media celebrities included Mike Shumann, sports anchor for the ABC7 Weekend News; Jim Barnett, color commentator for the Golden State Warriors; and Glenn Dickey, sports columnist for the San Francisco Chronicle. Sports stars included Vida Blue, Bill Laskey, Ray Wersching and Steve Bono.

Mike Shumann and Steve Andrews were the winners of the "A" category in the tennis tournament. John Lambert and Peter Concha were the winning team in the "B" category, and Mimi Bull and Randy Shandobil won in the "C" category.

The event was followed by a black-tie, Mardi Gras-themed gala at the Claremont Resort hosted by Academy Award-winning actress Rita Moreno. Comedian Frank Olivier headlined the event, entertaining the sold-out crowd with his unique brand of wild comedy and juggling antics.
