Raiders Football 101 – “A Touchdown for Breast Cancer”
The Oakland Raiders and Alta Bates Summit Medical Center held the eighth annual Football 101 event at the Raiders’ training facility in Alameda on Tuesday, October 18th. Over $25,000 was raised from the event and will benefit breast cancer screenings for low-income women in the community through Alta Bates Summit’s Markstein Cancer Education and Prevention Center and Comprehensive Cancer Center.
This year’s event was led off by Renel – host of the “Renel in the Morning” show on 98.1 KISS F.M., and in-game announcer for the San Francisco Giants. 130 women-only participates had the opportunity to be taught first-hand about rules of the game and strategy of football from Raiders Head Coach Norv Turner, Quarterback, Marques Tuiasosopo, special teams player Jarrod Cooper, defense player Kirk Morrison and safety Stuart Schweigert. The evening also included tours of the facility – from the auditorium where players and coaches watch game films each week to workout and locker rooms.
A raffle of autographed Raiders memorabilia was held and the winners were: Kristen Alcaraz, Teresa Clark, Theresa Alvarez, Susan Benassini, and Tiffany Yarbourgh.
Alta Bates Summit Medical Center and the Raiders have enjoyed an immensely successful partnership over the last seven years in the fight against breast cancer. A check for the proceeds from this year’s event will be presented to the medical center on the field just before the November 13th game between the Raiders and the Denver Broncos.
An article was also printed in the Oakland Tribune.
